Kombucha in India: A Practical Buying and Label Guide

From the label to the last kilometre: an Indian buyer's checklist

Buying kombucha in India is not just about finding a flavour or a bottle labelled “craft”. The useful decision is whether the actual product, information, storage and purchase arrangements fit your needs.

Kombucha is fermented tea. This guide focuses on choosing and buying it—not on repeating a definition, prescribing a daily routine or ranking brands without comparable evidence.

Step 1: check your non-negotiables

Before comparing prices, decide what matters: ingredients you avoid, caffeine sensitivity, sugar information, refrigeration access or strict alcohol avoidance.

Fermentation uses some sugar but leaves some behind, and tea-based kombucha can contain caffeine. Alcohol can also form and change during storage, as the US TTB kombucha guidance explains. Do not import a US regulatory threshold into an Indian product decision or assume it measures the bottle you are buying.

If complete alcohol avoidance is essential, and suitable product-specific information is unavailable, choose another drink. Pregnancy, childhood, weakened immunity or a medical restriction also warrant qualified advice rather than a flavour-based recommendation.

Step 2: turn the bottle around

In a shop, inspect the actual label. For a WhatsApp or online enquiry, request a readable label image for the flavour currently being offered—not just the front artwork.

Look for:

  • Identity: product name, manufacturer or packer, contact details and FSSAI licence or registration information.
  • Contents: ingredients, relevant allergen declarations and vegetarian/non-vegetarian marking.
  • Quantity and price: net volume, MRP and any separately quoted delivery charges.
  • Traceability: batch or lot identification and manufacturing/packing and expiry/use-by information, as applicable.
  • Handling: refrigeration and after-opening instructions.
  • Nutrition: the basis of the figures, including whether they are per 100 ml or per serving.

These are practical checks, not a legal compliance audit. An FSSAI number is not proof of a therapeutic benefit. If information is missing or unreadable, ask before paying. The detailed label checklist explains how to separate facts from promotional wording.

Step 3: compare on the same basis

Different bottle sizes can make comparisons misleading. Use this simple calculation:

Price per 100 ml = bottle price ÷ bottle volume in ml × 100.

Scoby Doo’s listed ₹220 MRP for 275 ml works out to ₹80 per 100 ml, before any separately confirmed delivery charges. That calculation compares cost, not nutritional quality.

For nutrition, compare the same volume and then consider how much you actually plan to drink. Do not substitute an estimate based on another brand, a brewing recipe or how tart it tastes. A cheaper multipack is not useful if you lack fridge space or cannot use it within its labelled dates.

Step 4: follow the storage instructions, not the slogan

For a bottle requiring refrigeration, plan the whole journey: shop or producer, transport, handover and your fridge. In hot weather, leaving it in a parked car while running errands defeats that plan. Ask about handling before arranging a long journey or an unattended delivery.

The WHO Five Keys to Safer Food includes keeping food at safe temperatures. Refrigeration slows fermentation but does not stop every change or reverse an unknown storage history.

A shelf-stable product may use different processing. “Refrigerated” is not a universal authenticity test, and “unpasteurised” is not automatically better for everyone.

Step 5: make a specific local enquiry

Scoby Doo was founded by Ashwin Alsi in Amravati in 2016. At the September 2026 review, Original Booch and Apple Pop are listed as available; Ginger Zinger and Guava Chilli are on hiatus, and Tropical Pine is seasonal. Check current flavours before choosing.

The Amravati buying guide covers local enquiries. Amravati, Nagpur, Wardha and Akola are listed regions, but each address needs confirmation. Other areas are enquiry-only.

Use the contact page for WhatsApp. Confirm stock, address serviceability, charges and the final total before proceeding. Ask about timing and payment arrangements; a website selection is not a completed checkout.

Final filter: evidence beats a superlative

The ISAPP consensus distinguishes fermented foods from products with demonstrated probiotic benefits. Neither “small-batch” nor “live culture” settles that question.

Choose a bottle whose details you can understand, whose storage you can manage and whose price makes sense to you. If an important answer is unavailable, waiting—or choosing a different drink—is a valid buying decision.

Quick answers

How should I choose kombucha in India?

First check whether its ingredients, caffeine and possible alcohol fit your needs. Then check the label, dates, storage and seller details. Compare like-for-like bottle sizes and confirm delivery before ordering.

Does an FSSAI number prove a health benefit?

No. Food-business identification is not evidence that a drink improves digestion or provides clinically demonstrated probiotics. Treat health claims as a separate question requiring relevant evidence.

Can I order Scoby Doo anywhere in India?

There is no pan-India delivery guarantee. Amravati, Nagpur, Wardha and Akola are listed regions, with each address confirmed individually. For other areas, ask whether service is possible.
